Great game...avoid the nerfs and idiots and you'll do fine.
As to which patch(es) to download.
If you can find a 1.5 *cumulative* patch (the file size will likely be well in excess of a gigabyte), that is all you need to download. If you can't find a cumulative patch, you'll need to find the highest cumulative patch you can and download it. (Cumulative patches contain ALL the patches that came before it.) Then, you will have to download and apply the remaining one by one.
Do your self a favour...Save the patches to a folder somewhere safe, and then install from the folder. This will save you the hassle of having to re-download in the future if you come across problems and have to re-install the game (or, de-patch to an earlier version).
If you also have Northern Strike, they generally recommend you patch-up, install NS, then re-install the latest patch. Don't ask...it works. Don't know why, but it works!Just purchased battlefield 2142 and i need to download a patch which one do i download?

You can play the game by just installing the 1.50 full patch, but this can cause crashes when looking at medals and stuff in BFHQ, so it is better to install 1.40 and then 1.50 incremental (not Beta or server patches).
